What is Moissanite?
The gemstone Moissanite was created by the stars. Henri Moissan, a French scientist who later won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, discovered it first in 1893. The gem that bears his name was discovered within a crater caused by a meteorite that fell to Earth in Arizona. The crystals he discovered were composed of silicon carbide, instead of diamonds as he initially thought.
The moissanite available today was created in a laboratory, since natural moissanite is extremely rare. One of the world's most scintillating gemstones was synthesized from the particles Moissan discovered after many years of trial and error.
